This year we planted trees a little later than usual and I am writing this blog a little late, too.  On Saturday, April 19th we planted 1,000 trees.  We typically plant between 1,000 and 2,000 trees each year.  This year, Dave decided to plant most of the trees to fill in holes in the tree field from the last few years of harvesting.  Dave and our nephew, Darin, got an early start on the tree planter and planted 800 trees before the rest of the crew showed up.  However, the remaining 200 we planted by hand after Dave drilled the holes with his new auger that he, along with our friend Jeff and his brother Fred, hooked up to his Ventrac.  It worked great!  It only took about an hour to an hour and a half to get the 200 planted.  Special thanks to those that helped us plant:  Darin, Nick, Steve & Gideon.  John would have helped if he hadn't sprained his ankle, but he did help Dave line up the trees, even in his condition.  It was a beautiful day and I enjoyed planting the trees, even if I was a little sore the next day.  Now, if the deer will just leave them alone!
